As expected, today, at the premier showcase of the new Surface, Microsoft will also demonstrate the new operating system. The name they’ve selected for the newcomer is rather strange: Windows 10 X.
Windows 10 X is an operating system designed specifically for folding and multi-screen devices. That is, it comprises WCOS, plus CShell, plus a shell for multiple screens. In other words, it is the bundle that has been discussed a lot over the last couple of years, including its mentions under the name Windows Lite.
If the rumors are to be believed, the new OS will also support the classic programs; they are supposed to run in their own containers. Most likely, all of this will be demonstrated on one of the partners’ devices or on a technical prototype. The company is unlikely to showcase its own Centaurus dual-screen tablet today. Windows 10 X is expected to be released in 2020 at the earliest.
